Christmas definitely came a little early for the Lady Rams (0-5) this past Friday night when they knocked off the 5-0 at Otsego Bulldogs. Both teams came out not willing to back down to start the game in the first half with several players Scoring for both teams going into the half down 13 to 14 to the Bulldogs.
“ I was very happy going into halftime only been down one. Over the years we knew I’d say go either comes out strong in the first quarter or makes the right adjustments at the half and it’s easy to fall behind to a team like them” send Coach Holland. “However We knew we still had a size advantage in the post that we weren’t utilizing enough of, so the message was keep looking for a post players and at least get them a touch and continue to stay aggressive and attacking the basket“ Holland added.
Otsego opened up the third-quarter knocking down to big three point shots, but the Rams were able to keep peace by getting Otsego to foul early and put the Rams at the free-throw line. End the quarter 23-20 Otsego.
In the fourth quarter though, it would be all South Haven. The Rams continued to attack the basket and go to the free through line knocking down 7 of their final 10 free throws. The Rams also continued pounding the glass for rebounds with Yazmine Hall and Bernadette Brown both in double digits for rebounds. Jordyn Holland also knocked down 2 big late 3 point baskets to open up the lead. With the Rams out scoring Otsego 17-6 in the final quarter they gain a big win in their division and a long awaited win for the program over Otsego.
“ I was really proud of how the girls never gave up and never backed down tonight. It was definitely a team effort and every girl contributed in their own way all the way. It also definitely relieves a lot of pressure off of the girls. It’s been a tough season so far and to get A key victory over a good program like Otsego should definitely add confidence to this group of girls and for the season going forward. “ Coach Holland said about is young South Haven team. “I was also really happy with how composed we stayed down the stretch knocking down the free throws. It has been a problem for us in the last few games, and in past years. We’ve tried to express how important free throws are during games. We’ve actually lost several games over the last few years just because our inability to make free throw baskets.“ Coach Holland added.
The Rams go into the holiday break on a win to get some rest and prepare for several games when they come back that could potential he move them up in the standings. The Rams will return to action on Friday, January 10th, when they face division rival Paw Paw at 5:45 PM. This game will be played along with the boys varsity to follow.
